How To Get the Most From this tea for Switching Away From Coffee

Use only half a teaspoon. This is a concentrated blend and you don't need more than that. Brew it the same way you would any of our loose leaf teas, steeped covered in a cup or teapot.

Drink it where your coffee used to go. Same mug, same time, same spot in your morning. That's what makes it stick.

Not ready to give up coffee completely? Stir half a teaspoon into your morning cup instead of brewing it on its own. It softens some of coffee's acidity and slows the caffeine spike, so your usual cup still tastes like your usual cup, just a little easier on you. You get the chicory, mushrooms and Ceylon cinnamon working alongside the coffee instead of against it.

Give it two to three weeks before you stop missing the caffeine, if you're drinking it on its own. Some mornings will feel like something is missing. That's the habit talking, not the blend failing.

A splash of coconut milk or whole milk softens the roasted, earthy edges.
Cutting back rather than quitting outright? Replace one cup a day first before you try to replace them all.

Because it's made with mushrooms and chicory which don't fully dissolve, you may find a little "sludge" at the bottom of your cup. We tell customers at the store that if they can make themselves drink that healthful sludge, they've gotten the most out of this tea.

  • Why does this tea work?

Chicory root: the gut-hero and one of nature’s richest sources of inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. Coffee works against your gut; chicory works for it. And deep-roasted, it brings the rich, coffee-like flavor that’s made it a go-to substitute from Europe to New Orleans for generations.

Ceylon cinnamon: true cinnamon, not the cassia most people have at home. Gentler on the stomach, and traditionally used to support steady blood sugar.

Lion's mane mushroom: long used to support focus and mental clarity. Steady support, not a jolt.

Reishi mushroom: a calming, grounding tonic traditionally used to help the body handle stress over time.

Cardamom, black pepper, clove, ginger and nutmeg: the spices that make this a ritual instead of just a functional drink.

Chaga, cordyceps and turkey tail mushrooms: three more of the big 5, here for the same everyday energy and immune support they're known for on their own.

These statements are based on traditional herbal use and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

  • Which tea is right for me?

Beyond Coffee Herbal is the right pick if you want out of coffee itself or don't want any caffeine. There's no coffee in it at all, so there is nothing to wean off of and no acidity to manage.

Don't care about replacing coffee, but are interested in mushrooms for health? Then our Fountain of Health Mushroom Tea gets you the same five mushrooms without the chicory and spice base.

Want a caffeine boost but in tea form instead of coffee? Our Runner's High Tea is made for that job instead.

  • Who should use extra caution?

Not recommended if you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition or are on medications without checking with your healthcare provider first.

This blend contains reishi mushroom, which can have a mild blood-thinning effect, and cordyceps, which may affect blood sugar. If you take blood thinners or diabetes medications, talk to your doctor before drinking this one.

This blend also contains turkey tail, which actively modulates immune response. If you take immunosuppressant medications or have an autoimmune condition, check with your doctor before making this a daily cup.

Chicory root is part of the ragweed and daisy family, so if you have a ragweed allergy, patch test with caution. It can also stimulate bile production, so skip it if you have gallstones or a bile duct obstruction.

Skip it if you have a mushroom allergy.

If you have a surgery scheduled, stop drinking this blend at least two weeks before your procedure and let your surgical team know what herbs you have been taking.

Questions from our Laguna Beach Store customers about this tea

It gives you the ritual of coffee without the caffeine. Chicory root is roasted dark, close enough to coffee that most first-timers do a double take. It also carries inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. Ceylon cinnamon helps your blood sugar stay steady alongside it. It also contains all 5 of the "big" functional mushrooms, so it helps with stress. One cup, no caffeine and good for you too.

Not exactly, and it isn't trying to. Roasted chicory gives it the same deep, roasted character people love about coffee, while Ceylon cinnamon, warming spices and functional mushrooms create a cup that's rich, satisfying and familiar in its own way. Most coffee drinkers find it scratches the same morning itch without relying on caffeine.

This blend has no caffeine, so it won't cause withdrawal on its own. But if you're cutting out several cups of coffee a day, you may still feel the effects of dropping that caffeine, things like a headache or low energy for a few days, since that comes from what you're stopping, not from what you're switching to. Replacing one cup at a time instead of quitting cold turkey usually makes that transition easier.

Most mushroom coffees are still instant coffee with mushroom extract added in, caffeine and all. This one starts from chicory, not coffee, so there's nothing to wean off of.
