Get the Most from this Tea for Deep Sleep

Manifest Dreams is made for the people who wake in the small hours. These tips come straight from our own guide on why you wake up at 3 a.m.

Drink this about 20 to 30 minutes before bed. Valerian likes a little head start, so this gives it the right amount of time to settle in before you hit the pillow.

We recommend sipping it at room temperature and very slowly. If you find yourself waking up to use the bathroom, try using only a half cup of water with your teaspoon of tea. You still get the full strength of the herbs without the extra fluid right before sleep.

If you finish dinner at 7 and wake at 3, that is eight hours without food. The resulting blood sugar dip can be what pulls you out of sleep. A small balanced snack earlier in the evening can help.

Waking in the night is often a cortisol and blood sugar story, not just a tired mind one. The calming herbs here help, but they work best alongside steady evening habits.

Keep the room cool: aim for the low to mid 60s. a warm cup in a cool, dark room is the combination your body reads as a signal that it is time to sleep.

If you wake and cannot drop off again within 15 to 20 minutes, get up. keep the lights low and do something quiet until you feel drowsy.

  • Why does this tea work?

Valerian root: the first half of our powerhouse duo. It is one of the better studied sleep herbs and is traditionally used to help you fall asleep faster and settle a restless body.

Hops flowers: these are the same flowers that bitter beer, but they have a long history in herbal tradition as a sleep aid. Hops and valerian are a classic team because they are thought to work much better together than apart.

Passionflower: the perfect herb for a busy mind. If you lie in bed with thoughts looping, this is the ingredient that helps quiet things down.

Skullcap: a traditional nervine that herbalists use to release tension and calm a nervous system that feels too wound up.Lavender: loved for its calming aroma, this is a classic choice to ease physical tension and help you unwind.

Lemon balm: a mellow, lemony herb traditionally used to lift a little of the day's stress so you can let it go.

    Hibiscus and rose:
these add a tart-ish, floral note that makes the cup look and taste beautiful. They soften the strong herbal base to something you will actually look forward to drinking.

  • Is this the right one for me?

Manifest Dreams is the strongest tea in our sleep lineup. Reach for this one when you are waking in the night and the other teas have not kept you down. The hops and valerian combination is what sets it apart.

If you are new to sleep teas, you do not have to start here. Think of it like this:

Dream Catcher is our gentle, non-sedative blend. This is the best place to start if you are new to sleep teas and the best one for gifting.

Goodnight sits in the middle. It is valerian-led but designed to be easy drinking and is our best-selling sleepy time tea.

Valerian Root Organic is for when you want the single herb completely on its own.Start gentle and work your way up.

Come to Manifest Dreams when you are ready for our full strength blend.

  • Who should skip this one?

Not recommended if you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition or are on medications without checking with your healthcare provider first.

This is our strongest blend. Valerian, hops and skullcap all add to drowsiness, so if you take a sedative, a sleep or anxiety medication, or you are drinking alcohol, the effects can stack and you should talk to your doctor first.

Skullcap in particular should be avoided in pregnancy, and there have been rare reports of liver issues tied to skullcap products, usually from adulterated or mislabeled supplies, so if you have liver concerns, check with your doctor before drinking this one.

What Customers at Our Laguna Beach Store Ask About This Tea

This is exactly what Manifest Dreams is built for. Hops and valerian are the ingredients for both halves of a good night: falling asleep and actually staying there. They have a long traditional reputation for working better together than either one does on its own. There is solid research behind the combination, with studies on valerian and hops extracts pointing to falling asleep faster and spending more time in deep sleep without the groggy morning after. In this blend they lead the way, supported by passionflower and skullcap to quiet a busy mind.

It surprises people since most of us only know hops from beer. But hops have a long history as a sleep herb on their own, and the real reason they are here is the pairing. Hops and valerian together are the classic herbalist combination for sleep.

The research on this specific duo is more encouraging than for a lot of single herbs, pointing to falling asleep faster and getting steadier deeper sleep. Valerian does the heavy lifting, hops rounds it out, and together they are the engine of this blend.

The hops and valerian combination is generally regarded as non habit forming, unlike many sleep medications, with studies finding no rebound when people stop. Most people do not report the groggy feeling they get from a sleeping pill. Because this is our strongest blend, treat the first night or two as a trial to see how your body responds. Drink it about 20 to 30 minutes before bed rather than right as you lie down.

Some people make it a nightly ritual, and the non habit forming nature of valerian and hops makes that easier than with many sleep aids. That said this is a strong blend and the long term research on daily use is thin. We prefer you use it in stretches with the occasional break. If your sleep trouble runs past a couple of weeks that is worth a conversation with your doctor rather than just reaching for a stronger cup.
