Unlock the Full Benefit of this Tea

Tea is only half the job. The other half of successfully sleeping is setting up your night so the herbs have something to work with. Here is what we tell people at the shop, straight from our sleep guide:

Drink your tea about 1.5 to 2 hours after dinner. We recommend drinking it at room temperature, so your body doesn't waste energy bringing the tea to body temperature and can focus solely on the effects of the herbs.

Take about 10 minutes to slowly sip your tea. If you drink it too fast, it creates information overload for the body. By sipping slowly, you allow your body to understand exactly what to do with the herbs to help you drift off.

The single most important habit is consistency. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, weekends included. It reinforces your circadian rhythm and is the one tip worth keeping even if you drop all the others.

Dim the lights. Turn the lights down an hour before bed and step away from the screens. That blue LED light puts the brakes on your body’s melatonin, the hormone that signals it is time to sleep.

Keep the room cool, aim for around 68 degrees. Your core temperature needs to drop a couple of degrees to slide into deep sleep, making a warm cup of tea in a cool room the perfect combination.

Rethink the nightcap, skip the alcohol. It feels like it helps, but it is a sedative that disrupts your sleep cycle rather than letting you sleep naturally. Also, stick to no caffeine past 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon.

Don’t fight the bed. If you are lying awake for more than 20 minutes, get up. Sit somewhere with the lights low, read a physical book, or practice a few minutes of meditation, and only return to bed when you feel sleepy.

  • Why does this tea work?

Chamomile: we use this as our base because it’s the gold standard for taking the physical edge off a long day, allowing your body to start its transition to sleep.

Lavender: more than just a scent, this is our go-to for quieting the mental chatter that keeps you tossing and turning.

Skullcap: when you’re "wired but tired," this traditional nervine helps release the tension held in your nervous system so you can actually sink into your mattress.

Catnip: a gentle folk remedy that helps your body release the physical stiffness of a stressful day so you can finally relax.

Oatstraw: this is our secret for nourishment; it’s traditionally used to soothe a frayed nervous system and support a calm, natural wind-down.

Red clover and calendula: we include these as soft, traditional botanicals that round out the blend and nurture your body’s need for gentle, consistent calm.

Lemon balm: a mellow, lemony herb traditionally used to lift a little of the day's stress so you can let it go.

Spearmint, lemon peel and thyme: we add these to brighten the cup, turning a functional, herb-heavy blend into a soothing ritual you’ll actually look forward to drinking.

These statements are based on traditional herbal use and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

  • Is this the right one for me?

We tell most people to start with Dream Catcher because it tastes great, and is gentle and non-sedative, making it the perfect first step if you want to fall asleep without being groggy the next morning.

If you just know you need the stronger stuff, we recommend moving up our strength ladder in this way:

If you need more support falling asleep: try Goodnight Organic. it leads with valerian but stays gentle and balanced so it still tastes like a treat.

If you keep waking up: try Manifest Dreams. this is the strongest blend we make, pairing hops with valerian to help you stay asleep through the night.

If you want to keep it simple but strong: try our Organic Valerian Root. This is the straight, single herb for when you want the power of valerian and nothing else.

Our advice that we give in store is to begin with Dream Catcher. Step up to Goodnight or Manifest Dreams only if you find you truly need the extra support.

If you're giving a gift for a sleep-deprived friend, we recommend Dream Catcher because it doesn't contain valerian, which can interfere with medications that your recipient might be taking.

  • Who should skip this one?

We always recommend checking with your healthcare provider before drinking this if you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition, or are currently taking any medications.

Even though this is a gentle blend, ingredients like skullcap and catnip can increase drowsiness. If you take sedatives, sleep aids, or anxiety medication, or if you are drinking alcohol, these effects can stack. Please check with your doctor first to ensure this blend is a safe fit for you.

What Customers Ask Us About This Tea

For many people, yes. Dream Catcher is inspired by a recipe our teacher in India handed down to us. It follows the Ayurvedic approach of using gentle, calming herbs like chamomile, lavender, and skullcap to help the body settle into rest.Chamomile takes the edge off physical tension, lavender quiets a busy head, and skullcap is the kind of herb we reach for on those wired-but-tired evenings. There is no valerian here and nothing meant to knock you out. The goal is to support your own wind-down so sleep comes more easily. It is just a simple, floral cup you can drink on any ordinary night.

For most people, no, and that is one of the nice things about this blend. No valerian, no caffeine, no melatonin, just gentle herbs, so you generally will not wake up with that heavy foggy feeling you get from a sedative or sleep supplement.

We recommend drinking it 30 minutes to a couple of hours before bed rather than right at lights out. That gives the herbs time to do their job without lingering when you wake up.

A lot of our customers make this part of their nightly wind-down, and because it is gentle and caffeine free it works well as a regular ritual.

We do suggest using any sleep tea in stretches rather than relying on it indefinitely, with an occasional break. If your sleep trouble continues past a couple of weeks, that is worth a conversation with your doctor rather than just reaching for another cup.

Skullcap is one of the quietly useful herbs in this blend. Herbalists call it a nervine, which is just an old word for an herb that calms a wound up nervous system. It is exactly what you want on those wired but tired evenings when your body is exhausted but your head is still going.

It is generally well tolerated. Old concerns about skullcap and the liver trace back to supplies that were mixed with a different unrelated herb, which is why we source only clean organic skullcap from reputable suppliers. Because it can add to drowsiness, it does not mix well with sedatives, anxiety medication, or alcohol, and avoid it if you are pregnant.
