Sweet Licorice Root Butter Cookies
Makes about 24 cookies
Tender butter cookies warmed with ground licorice root and cardamom, with a hint of orange zest — a cozy, subtly sweet treat.
Ingredients
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp fine sea salt
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp Tea & Turmeric Licorice Root, finely ground
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom
- 1 tsp orange zest (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle, grind the licorice root into a fine powder.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, ground licorice root, and ground cardamom.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Stir in the orange zest, if using.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms.
- Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Gently flatten each cookie with the bottom of a glass.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
