My grandmother, who we called Amma Amma, never trusted table salt.

She grew up in South India where salt was kallu uppu, unprocessed rock salt that came from the earth exactly as nature made it. When she immigrated and eventually made her home in eastern Canada, she brought her salt with her from India the same way she brought her spices. Suitcase after suitcase, trip after trip. She said table salt had no minerals. She said it was dead.

I was a child when she told me this. I didn't fully understand it then. But after 25 years of clinical Ayurvedic practice and four years of running Tea & Turmeric in Laguna Beach, I understand it completely. Amma Amma was right. And the salt sitting on our shelves today is the closest thing I have found to what she carried home in those suitcases.

This blog is about what she knew, what the science is now confirming, and why the salt you choose matters more than most people realize, especially if you deal with migraines, poor sleep, muscle cramps, or that wired but exhausted feeling that never quite goes away.

What Table Salt Actually Is

Let's start here because most people don't know what happens to salt before it reaches that familiar white shaker on a restaurant table.

Conventional table salt is harvested and then put through high heat processing that strips out the naturally occurring minerals. What's left is almost pure sodium chloride. Then synthetic iodine is added back in, along with anti-caking agents to keep it from clumping. What you end up with is a processed product that barely resembles what came out of the earth.

Amma Amma did not have a chemistry degree. She had something better. She had generations of Ayurvedic kitchen wisdom that told her, without any lab report, that what came out of that white shaker was not real salt. She was not wrong.

What Celtic Salt Actually Is

Celtic salt, known in French as sel gris or gray salt, comes from tidal ponds along the coast of Brittany in northwestern France. It is harvested by hand using wooden rakes, sun-dried, never heated, and never refined. That gray color comes from the mineral-rich clay of the salt beds, and that clay is part of what makes it so dense in trace minerals. It stays moist because nothing has been stripped out of it. You are getting the salt exactly as it came from the sea.

It contains magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron alongside naturally occurring sodium chloride. Not synthetic versions added back after processing. The real thing, in the form your body was designed to recognize.

In Ayurveda, this is not a new idea. The ancient texts speak of Sendha Namak, unprocessed rock salt, as one of the most important everyday healing tools. It was considered medicine when used with intention. Kallu uppu in my grandmother's Telugu. Sel gris in a French salt marsh. Celtic salt on our shelves at Tea & Turmeric in Laguna Beach. Different names, same wisdom that Amma Amma carried across an ocean in a suitcase.

The Mineral Most Women Are Missing

Of all the minerals in Celtic salt, the one I care most about, especially for women, is magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common and most overlooked nutritional gaps in women today. According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium plays a role in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. And yet most women are running low without knowing it.

The signs show up in ways we have just learned to live with. Migraines. Heart palpitations. Muscle cramps. PMS. Anxiety. Poor sleep. Feeling wired but exhausted. If you recognize yourself in that list, low magnesium may be part of what is going on.

Amma Amma never called it magnesium deficiency. She called it the body being out of balance. She would look at someone and say their minerals were low, their system was depleted. She would adjust what they ate, including the salt they used. What she was describing and what the NIH now documents in clinical research are not as far apart as you might think.

Most magnesium supplements use forms that the body does not absorb efficiently. You take them, they move through you, and you wonder why you feel no different. The magnesium in Celtic salt is naturally occurring and found alongside the full spectrum of trace minerals from the sea. While Celtic salt is not a standalone magnesium supplement, many people find that adding a small pinch to their morning water as part of a broader daily wellness practice makes a noticeable difference over time. That is how I use it and how I teach my customers to use it.

This is why I drink our Headache Relief Organic Tea with a pinch of Celtic salt dissolved in my water bottle every single day. Migraines and headaches are often rooted in mineral depletion, poor hydration, and chronic low-grade deficiency. Addressing that daily, before a migraine ever starts, is the Ayurvedic approach. You do not wait for the fire to start before you think about water. You keep the body nourished so the fire has less to work with.

The Migraine Protocol I Swear By

I have dealt with migraines for years. If you have ever had a real migraine, not just a bad headache but a full migraine that takes your entire day, you know exactly what I mean when I say they are awful. For a long time I just pushed through, took something for the pain, and lost half my day or sometimes more.

And then I started doing something very simple with Celtic salt.
When I feel a migraine coming on, at that very first warning signal, I take four or five granules of coarse Celtic salt and place them under my tongue. I let my saliva absorb it slowly. I do not swallow right away. If I catch it early enough, before the migraine becomes full on, I have often found it helps lessen the severity or stop the progression completely.

I now keep Celtic salt everywhere. A small jewelry bag in my bathroom. One in my purse. One in my car. The key is catching it early. Once a migraine is fully established it is so much harder to manage. This protocol is about interception, not rescue.

I want to be clear: this is my personal experience and what my customers tell me works for them. I am not a doctor and I am not making medical claims. What works for me may not work the same way for everyone. If you get severe or frequent migraines please work with your healthcare provider. But as a first response, something you can do immediately at the very first sign, this has been genuinely helpful for me and for hundreds of customers I have shared it with over four years at Tea & Turmeric.

Harvard Health Publishing notes that magnesium has been studied as a preventive treatment for migraines, and research suggests that people who experience frequent migraines tend to have lower magnesium levels than those who do not. Addressing that mineral gap every day is where the real wellness work happens. That is the daily practice. The sublingual protocol is the emergency response when the daily practice needs backup.

Inflammation can also be part of the bigger wellness picture. If you would like to learn more, you can explore our Inflammation Tea Complete Wellness Guide, where I cover the herbs, foods, and lifestyle practices I use to support a healthy inflammatory response.

Celtic Salt vs Himalayan Pink Salt: Which One Do You Actually Need

This is the question I get most often at the shop. And my answer is always the same: both, and here is why.

Celtic salt and Himalayan pink salt are both unprocessed and both mineral-rich. They are both infinitely better than anything coming out of a conventional table salt shaker. But they do different things.

Himalayan pink salt comes from ancient sea beds in Pakistan. It is dry, clean, and beautifully pink. It contains 84 trace minerals and it is stunning as a finishing salt, sprinkled on top of a dish right before you serve it. On avocado toast. On salmon right out of the pan. On a salad. On dark chocolate. You see it and you taste it and it elevates everything it touches.

Celtic salt is your everyday wellness salt. It goes into your morning water, a small pinch in a warm glass before your tea or coffee. It dissolves into your soups, grains, and sauces. It is the one you keep in a jewelry bag in your purse. This is the salt that does the daily work in your body.

Amma Amma would have understood this distinction immediately. In her kitchen, different preparations called for different ingredients used in specific ways. Salt was not just salt. It had a purpose, a context, a place in the rhythm of the day. That is still how I think about it.

What About the Safety Questions

I want to address this directly because I know people are asking it online and I would rather you hear it from someone with 25 years of clinical experience than from a TikTok comment section.

Natural unprocessed salts harvested from the sea do contain trace amounts of naturally occurring minerals and elements from the earth, and yes, that includes some that sound alarming when you encounter them on a wellness forum. This is true of almost everything that comes from healthy soil or clean water. Spinach, turmeric, shrimp, sweet potatoes, all of them contain naturally occurring trace elements at levels your body processes and eliminates as part of normal daily function.

In Ayurveda, the source and form of a mineral has always mattered as much as the mineral itself. Naturally occurring trace elements bound within mineral-rich clay from a clean harvest are not the same as industrial contamination. Amma Amma understood this intuitively. She did not fear the minerals in her kallu uppu. She trusted the source. That is the same standard I apply when I choose what goes on the shelves at Tea & Turmeric.

Before I put any product in my store or in my own body, I research where it comes from, how it is harvested, and how it is tested. I have been using the same Celtic salt I sell every single day for four years. I chose it carefully after doing that research and I stand behind it completely.

If you have specific health concerns, including kidney disease, hypertension, or a sodium-restricted diet prescribed by your doctor, please consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your salt intake. That applies to any salt, processed or unprocessed.

How to Start Using Celtic Salt Daily

Morning water is the simplest place to start. Add a small pinch to a warm glass of water before your tea or coffee. It should taste very slightly mineral, not salty. Your body will notice the difference before your taste buds do.

For cooking, use it anywhere you would use regular salt. It dissolves beautifully into soups, grains, and sauces because the moisture in the crystal helps it melt evenly into hot liquid.

For mineral stacking, dissolve a pinch into your water bottle alongside our Headache Relief Organic Tea. This is what I do every day. It is not complicated. It is the kind of simple daily nourishment that Amma Amma built into her kitchen without ever calling it a wellness practice.

For the migraine protocol, keep four or five granules of coarse Celtic salt in a small jewelry bag in your purse, your bathroom, and your car. Place them under your tongue at the very first sign of a migraine. Do not swallow right away. Let your saliva do the work slowly.

For finishing, reach for the Himalayan pink salt. Save the Celtic for the daily work.

Frequently Asked Questions We Get in Our Shop

Does Celtic salt raise blood pressure?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear at the shop. The honest answer is that the issue with blood pressure and salt has always been about total sodium intake, not which salt you use. Celtic salt actually contains slightly less sodium per quarter teaspoon than conventional table salt because its larger crystal size means fewer granules fit in the same measure. If you are replacing table salt with Celtic salt in similar amounts, your sodium intake stays roughly the same. That said, if you have hypertension, kidney disease, or are on a sodium-restricted diet prescribed by your doctor, please work with your healthcare provider on what is right for your specific body.

Does Celtic salt have iodine? Should I be worried about switching from table salt?

Celtic salt does not have added iodine. Table salt is artificially fortified with synthetic iodine specifically because the refining process removes everything natural from it. Celtic salt contains trace amounts of naturally occurring iodine from the seawater it comes from, but not enough to meet your daily requirement on its own. If you make the switch to Celtic salt as your primary salt, make sure you are getting iodine from other sources. Seaweed, dairy, eggs, and seafood are all excellent natural sources. This is actually how Ayurveda approaches mineral balance: through a varied, whole-food diet rather than relying on one fortified processed product to do all the work. Amma Amma ate an Indian diet rich in seafood, lentils, and vegetables. She never needed an iodine supplement because her food did the job.

Is Celtic salt better than Himalayan pink salt?

They are different rather than one being better than the other. Celtic salt has higher magnesium and calcium content and retains natural moisture, making it ideal for dissolving into water and cooking. Himalayan pink salt is drier, has a clean mild flavor, and contains iron as its standout mineral, which gives it that beautiful pink color. I use both every single day and I sell both in the store because they genuinely serve different purposes. Celtic salt is your daily wellness salt. Himalayan is your finishing salt. Your kitchen needs both.

What is the Celtic salt trick I keep seeing on TikTok?

The viral version is usually about placing a small amount of Celtic salt under your tongue before drinking water to improve hydration. The principle behind it is real: trace minerals including magnesium and potassium support electrolyte balance and help your body actually use the water you drink. My version of this, which I have been doing for four years and sharing with hundreds of customers at Tea & Turmeric, is specifically for migraines. Four or five granules under the tongue at the very first sign. Catch it early and it can stop it or significantly soften it. I keep a small jewelry bag of Celtic salt in my purse at all times. Ask me about it next time you are in the shop.

Can I use Celtic salt every day?

Yes, and I do. A small pinch in morning water, cooking throughout the day, and the mineral stacking practice with our Headache Relief tea is how I use it consistently. The NIH recommends keeping total sodium intake under 2,300 milligrams per day for healthy adults. A small pinch of Celtic salt in your morning water is nowhere near that threshold. As with everything in holistic health, it is about intention and moderation, not excess.

Amma Amma brought her salt home from India in a suitcase because she knew something that took the mainstream wellness world decades to figure out. Real salt, unprocessed and mineral-complete, is not just a seasoning. It is a daily act of nourishment. It is what your body was designed to receive.

That wisdom is sitting on our shelves at 1175 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach. Come in and I will show you both salts side by side. You can touch them, smell them, taste them. And if you deal with migraines, ask me about the jewelry bag. I will set you up the same way I set up every customer who has walked through that door carrying the weight of a headache they cannot shake.
