This is Part 2 of our three-part series on turmeric. If you haven't read Part 1 yet, start there. It covers what curcumin is and what it does in your body. Here we talk about something that most people get completely wrong: how to actually absorb turmeric so it works. And in Part 3 we get into the cooking techniques that make all of this practical in your kitchen.
Why Turmeric Is Hard to Absorb
We hear this all the time in the shop: "I've been taking turmeric every day and I don't notice anything." Usually the first question we ask is: are you taking it with fat and black pepper?
That is almost always the answer. Not the turmeric itself, but how it is being prepared.
Curcumin is fat soluble. That means it does not dissolve in water. When you stir turmeric into plain water or a watery smoothie, most of the curcumin passes through your digestive system without being absorbed. As Harvard Health notes, incorporating turmeric into a meal with fats increases the absorption of curcumin by the gastrointestinal tract. This is not a new discovery. Traditional Indian cooking has always combined turmeric with ghee, coconut oil, or full fat milk. Ancient culinary wisdom and modern science are saying exactly the same thing.
How to Absorb Turmeric (Fat, Black Pepper, and Heat)
Getting turmeric to absorb properly comes down to three things working together. Miss any one of them and you are leaving most of the benefit on the table.
Fat: Fat Is the First Step for Turmeric Absorption
Curcumin is fat soluble, which means fat helps it absorb more effectively in the body. This is why turmeric has always been paired with ghee, oil, or full fat milk in traditional cooking. Fat makes a meaningful difference in absorption and is one reason traditional preparations consistently pair turmeric with ghee, milk, or oil.
Use a full fat milk of your choice, ghee, coconut oil, or good olive oil. This is not optional if you want the turmeric to do its job.
Black Pepper:Why Black Pepper Makes Turmeric Work Better
Research suggests piperine, a compound found in black pepper, may improve curcumin bioavailability. One often-cited human study found substantially higher blood concentrations when curcumin was paired with piperine compared to curcumin taken alone. While food is more complex than isolated extracts, this helps explain why traditional cuisines have always paired turmeric with black pepper. Piperine works by slowing the enzymes that would otherwise break curcumin down before your body can use it.
A pinch of black pepper in your cooking is not just flavor. It is doing real work, which is why our Sacred Golden Milk already has it built into the blend.
Heat:Why Warming Turmeric in Fat Matters
Briefly warming turmeric in fat deepens flavor and can support absorption, which is one reason blooming spices in ghee or oil is such a longstanding culinary practice. In Ayurveda, turmeric is often gently warmed in ghee before being used, a practice rooted in both tradition and kitchen experience. We cover the technique in practical detail in Part 3.

How Much Turmeric Do You Actually Need
When you are using our Therapeutic Turmeric 7.3%, half a teaspoon a day is enough. Because of its higher curcumin content, you need less turmeric per serving, which makes it easier to incorporate consistently into everyday meals. More is not better here. Consistent daily use, prepared properly with fat, black pepper, and a little warmth, is what makes the difference over time.
The Story Behind Our Sacred Golden Milk
This recipe was given to me by my guruji, an Ayurvedic teacher I studied with for years. I waited twenty five years for him to share it. When I told him I was opening Tea & Turmeric, he finally did. It is a sacred recipe, and we do not use that word lightly. Every ingredient is chosen to work together, with the right combinations to support the potency of the turmeric. Because the formula is correct and the turmeric is therapeutic grade, half a teaspoon is all you need. That is the difference between a well-formulated blend and something that just looks good on a shelf. Warm it with a full fat milk of your choice and you have everything you need in one cup.
Food vs Supplements
Customers often ask whether a turmeric supplement is better than using the real spice. It is a fair question and here is our honest answer.
When you take a supplement you generally do not know the quality of the turmeric inside it, the curcumin content, whether black pepper is included, or how it was processed. And there is no heat source involved in taking a capsule, which is one of the three things that supports absorption. You are also removing turmeric from the food context it has always lived in.
At Tea & Turmeric we know exactly where our Therapeutic Turmeric comes from. We know the family in India who grows it. We know the curcumin content is 7.3%. We know how to prepare it so your body can actually use it. That is a very different thing from a capsule on a shelf.
We focus on food-based turmeric because that is the form we work with every day and understand best. If you are considering a supplement, please speak with your healthcare provider first.
The Easiest Way to Get It Right Every Day
Our Sacred Golden Milk blend was formulated specifically with bioavailability in mind. Based on an ancient Ayurvedic recipe from our guruji, it combines turmeric with the right supporting ingredients so the work of getting it right is already done for you. Warm it with a full fat milk of your choice, add a pinch of black pepper, and you have everything you need in one cup.

Frequently Asked Questions We Get in Our Shop
Why doesn't turmeric absorb well on its own?
Curcumin is fat soluble, which means it does not dissolve in water. Without fat present, most of the curcumin you consume passes through your body without being absorbed. This is why preparation method matters as much as quality.
How does black pepper help with turmeric absorption?
Black pepper contains a compound called piperine that research suggests can support curcumin absorption. One well-known human study found substantially higher blood concentrations of curcumin when paired with piperine compared to curcumin taken alone. A pinch of freshly ground black pepper alongside your turmeric is one of the simplest things you can do to help it work better.
What fat works best with turmeric?
Ghee is the traditional Ayurvedic choice and works beautifully for both cooking and golden milk. Full fat coconut milk, whole dairy milk, and good olive oil all work well too. The key is that the fat is real and present in the same preparation as the turmeric.
Can I just add turmeric to my smoothie?
A smoothie is not the most effective way to take turmeric because there is no heat source, and heat is one of the three things that helps your body absorb it properly. That said, if you do add it to a smoothie, use a full fat milk as your base, add a tablespoon of coconut oil or almond butter, and include a pinch of black pepper. That gives you two of the three and is meaningfully better than turmeric in water or a low fat smoothie.
Is half a teaspoon of therapeutic turmeric really enough?
Yes, when you are using our Therapeutic Turmeric 7.3% and preparing it correctly with fat and black pepper. Higher curcumin content means you need less per serving. Consistency matters far more than quantity.
How long should I use therapeutic turmeric before I notice a difference?
Everyone is different. Some customers notice a change in a few weeks, others take longer. For guidance on how we recommend cycling therapeutic turmeric, including when to take breaks, see the FAQ in Part 1 of this series.
Is golden milk the best way to take turmeric?
It is one of the best ways, yes. Golden milk made with full fat milk, turmeric, black pepper, and warming spices brings together all three absorption keys in one cup. It is also a calming, non-caffeinated ritual that is easy to build into your day.
Can I cook with therapeutic turmeric or is it only for golden milk
You can absolutely cook with it. The same absorption principles apply: bloom it briefly in ghee or oil, add black pepper somewhere in the dish, and use it in a meal that contains fat. Part 3 of this series covers all the cooking techniques in detail.
If I am taking medication, can I still use turmeric?
Please always speak with your doctor first. Turmeric at therapeutic levels can interact with certain medications. This is not something to guess at. Your healthcare provider is the right person to ask.
The Simplest Shift You Can Make Today
You do not need to overhaul your kitchen or commit to a complicated wellness protocol. You just need fat, black pepper, and a little warmth. That is it. Three things that traditional Ayurvedic kitchens across India have always known and that modern research is now catching up to.
Half a teaspoon of the right turmeric, prepared the right way, every single day. That is where the difference lives. Not in the dramatic gesture but in the small daily habit that your body can actually build on.
If you are not sure where to start, our Sacred Golden Milk has everything already built in. Just add heat and a full fat milk of your choice. That is the whole protocol.
